Do We Need The Rod For Healing?
'Mischief is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it out'; and, 'spare not the rod and spoil not the child', are two terms many of us have often heard, especially at the time when we were at the receiving end of the rod. Many of us respoded to the sting from that rod, and nowadays, when we meet and talk of old times we recall those days when parents were not bound by shortsighted laws or the rights of the child, and were left to bring up their children in the way they should go so that when they are old they would not depart from it. I am not advocating corporal punishment for every misdemeanour, nor am I saying that all of us older folks turned out as we ought to, but certainly most of us were deterred from delinquency in our youth, and by extension, criminal behaviour in later life, because of the lessons indelibly sealed by the stripes from the rod. I am reminded that it is written of Jesus that by the stripes he received when he was beaten mankind is healed, therefore, I am wondering if there is need to bring back the rod in disciplining children and even mature criminals to bring about a healing of the growing tendency towards crime in the world today.

Contributor's Note
I am not contending here with you child psychologists or you religious gurus, but you are allowed to sharpen your knives. What do you think? To flog or not to flog is the question, because whether you believe it or not something drastic has to be done or more of our youths would die violent deaths at the hands of their peers.
